Certifications and labels


Having trustworthy partners you can count on is paramount in your field. In order to ensure customer food safety, a number of manufacturers are committed to an ongoing certification process.

These certifications are monitored by accredited external organizations, that certify compliance of manufacturing and organizational systems of services with strict regulations.

This is a voluntary effort from manufacturers that wish to provide the guarantee that products on are safe and high-quality.

IFS* Food is an international standard that audits quality and security of processes and products in food businesses. This certification examines food control procedures, quality control, HACCP** standard compliance, and traceability.

IFS Food certification highlights manufacturing and sales efforts put in place by companies for brand safety and quality. It was developed thanks to the active participation of accredited certification bodies, distributors, manufacturers, and foodservice providers around the world.

With IFS Food certification, certified manufacturers guarantee product safety and quality.

BRC Food is a private British standard essentially for private label food suppliers. This certification brings the main British large-scale retailers together (Sainsbury, Wal Mart, Tesco…), defines a shared foundation of food safety requirements, and assesses quality control systems and food safety.

A BRC Food-certified manufacturer guarantees product safety and quality.

The ISO 9001 standard defines requirements for efficient quality control management. It delivers guidelines and tools for companies looking to improve product quality and align with customer expectations.

Companies complying with ISO 9001 standards ensure that their products meet legal and regulatory requirements, as well as your client requirements.

ISO 22000 is an international standard, designed to ensure global food chain safety. The standard, applied to food safety management, was developed by food industry experts along with representatives from expert international organizations in close cooperation with the Codex Alimentarius Commission

ISO 22000 guarantees uniform application of the Codex HACCP* system for food safety, constant from country to country.

IFS* Global Market Food is a standardized food safety assessment program. The program supports “small and lesser-developed companies” in developing food safety management systems and gradual implementation of IFS Food.

IFS Global Market Food is adapted to small and medium-sized businesses and guarantees implementation of a foundational food safety management system.

Labels and awards

A label is an illustration of quality that identifies and rewards products that have been found to comply with specific standards. The criteria are detailed in strict specifications and monitored by an accredited and independent organization.

The labels you will encounter on highlight products with superior nutritional quality and taste, and reward products that reflect French regional traditions or display respect for the environment.

Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), or Controlled Designation of Origin, is an established French label. It identifies a product, its authenticity, and geographical origin.

AOC guarantees product quality and characteristics, as well as terroir and craftsmanship. AOC products comply with a set of guidelines approved by the INAO* (National Origin and Quality Institute), part of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The AOC label ensures that a product is made using craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation.

Appellation d’origine protégée (AOP), or Protected Designation of Origin, is a European Union-wide label. It designates products that, for major production stages, are carried out using renowned craftsmanship techniques in one geographical area. The craftsmanship, source of the product’s unique and sought-after specificities, is protected by the European AOP label.

AOP guarantees that products are made using craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation.

Indication géographique protégée (IGP), or Protected Geographical Indication, identifies food products whose quality, reputation, or other characteristics are linked to their geographical origin.

To obtain this official label, one of the stages, be it production, processing or preparation, must take place in the defined geographical area.

IGP represents craftsmanship and quality attributable to geographical origin, and confers national and international protection.

Spécialité́ traditionnelle garantie (STG), or Traditional Specialties Guaranteed (TSG), represents a product with specific qualities linked to traditional ingredients and production techniques.

This label highlights craftsmanship, ancient and traditional methods that are national, regional, or local and that can be implemented outside of the product’s native region.

Traditional Specialties Guaranteed ensures that a product is made in keeping with craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation.

Label Rouge, or Red Label, guarantees superior quality compared to similar products on the market.

Label Rouge product quality comes from strict requirements in the production and manufacturing stages.

Rules are defined in specifications approved by the National Origin and Quality Institute (INAO) and an interministerial decree published in the French Republic’s Official Bulletin.

Organic agriculture (Agriculture Biologique) is a method of production that brings optimal environmental practices, respect of biodiversity, preservation of natural resources, and a high level of animal well-being together.

Across the sector, providers commit to respecting strict regulations that favor non-polluting methods, prohibit GMO use, and limit chemical input use while favoring the use of natural and renewable resources.

Bleu-Blanc-Cœur is an organization that brings food business players together with a shared goal of quality: animal, environmental, and nutritional.

Bleu-Blanc-Coeur is based on the following founding values:

• Ensuring respect of the food chain, from fields to the table
• Improving animal feed
• Preserving nature

Bleu-Blanc-Cœur has become the first nutritional and environmental movement to be recognized by the Health and Agriculture Ministries.

Saveurs en’Or is a collective brand that promotes and recommends products from the Nord Pas de Calais and Picardie regions.

Products with the Saveurs en’Or logo reflect the food abundance and craftsmanship of these two regions.

Produit en Bretagne (Made in Brittany) is an organization that was started to promote companies that manufacture their products in Brittany and support their development.

“Gourmandie” is a collective regional organization that identifies high-quality products from Normandy that are a guarantee of regional craftsmanship.

Produit en Poitou-Charentes (Made in Poitou-Charentes) is an organization that supports food businesses in the Poitou-Charentes region.

It supports growth of local food industry players by promoting their craftsmanship.
